Frequently Asked Questions About Yoga Grip Gloves

  1. Question: What exactly are the gloves designed to do?
Answer: Our hand and foot gloves were designed to reduce dangerous slipping on yoga mats due to excessive perspiration on the hands and feet. Our gloves were also designed to provide a hygienic barrier between you and the unhygienic circumstances.
  2. Question: How do the gloves work?
Answer: The gloves absorb perspiration keeping it away from the mat, while grip dots along the bottom provide traction.
  3. Question: What are the gloves made of?
Answer: The gloves are made of a 90% cotton 10% lycra blend that is especially hand woven for Sun Salutations, Inc. The grip dots are made of PVC. The gloves are also partially hand sewn.
  4. Question: Why did you choose the cotton/lycra fabric blend? Why don’t you make the gloves out of nylon or some other synthetic material
Answer: When we designed our gloves we knew we needed to use a fabric that would absorb perspiration while at the same time provided extreme comfort. Cotton/lycra achieves this goal. Cotton is a natural fabric that absorbs moisture and keeps perspiration away from the mat where it causes slipping. Most synthetic materials cannot absorb moisture but instead “wick” it away, or move the moisture to the outer layers of the material where it is supposed to evaporate. If you were to use synthetic gloves during a yoga workout, they would press against the mat, trap the moisture that was unable to “wick away,” and clause slipping inside the glove. Cotton also retains its shape better than most synthetic materials and is more friendly to the skin.
  5. Question: Are the gloves hot? I’m a little apprehensive about covering my hands and feet while I practice.
Answer: The material is an ultra thin, breathable cotton/lycra fabric and is not hot in any way. It is so thin in fact, that in many cases, you can still feel the glorious energies one would experience while practicing with bare hands or feet. The material is very similar to the stretchy cotton-lycra material used to make most work out clothing. If you feel that having a glove cover the whole hand is too claustrophobic, you might want to try our Yoga Grip Cut-Offs, the hand gloves with the tips of the fingers cut off.
  6. Question: How should the gloves fit?
Answer: Proper fit is critical in order for gloves to provide maximum results. They should fit snug, like a second skin. Having a glove that is too big could result in your hand or foot slipping inside the glove. If you find you may be in between sizes and go with the larger size, you might try washing them and then tossing them in the dryer for about 15-20 to shrink them up a bit. The dots can come off in the dryer so dry at your own risk! If you are in between glove sizes and decide to go with the smaller pair yet they are still a little tight, wash your gloves and put them on to stretch them.
  7. Question: What do I do if I am slipping inside my gloves?
Answer: If you are slipping inside your gloves they may be too big for you. In that case we suggest you try a smaller glove size. If your glove fits perfectly but you are still slipping inside your glove, your problem could be that your hands are too dry. Again our gloves were designed to absorb perspiration to help keep moisture away from the mat and they actually work better the wetter they get! Adding moisture to a, “smooth surface” cotton provides texture to the material and thus the much needed traction inside the glove. If you are not a person who perspires, try wetting your hands before you put your gloves on. You can also try wetting down the gloves themselves before use.
  8. Question: Will my gloves work on the carpet?
Answer: The gloves were not designed for carpet practice however many people DO use them for that very purpose with effective results. We are in the process of developing gloves that are designed specifically for use on carpet. We call them our Yoga Grip Grits…the travel gloves. Our grits are made of the same 90% cotton, 10% lycra blend that our regular gloves are made of. Unlike our regular gloves with their PVC grip soles, our Grits have a sand based sole that really adheres well to carpet and rugs. No more traveling with a mat and they are completely washable!
  9. Question: How do I wash my gloves?
Answer: Because of their delicate design, we recommend washing your Yoga Grip Gloves by hand, or in the gentle cycle of your washing machine. Be sure to use cold water and a mild soap. Never rub the dots together. Lay flat or hang to dry.
  10. Question: May I put my gloves in the dryer?
Answer: Normally we do not recommend that you place your gloves in the dryer due to the fact that the life of the glove will decrease, as the PVC grip is not produced to withstand the high temperatures. However if your gloves are a bit loose and you would like a better fit, we suggest that you place them in the dryer for about 15-20 minutes. Keep in mind, there is always a chance some of the grip dots will come off in the dryer.
  11. Question: How long do the gloves last?
Answer: It depends upon the usage. Our hand gloves wear along the lines of many athletic gloves such weight lifting gloves, golf gloves, baseball gloves, etc. Our foot gloves wear along the lines of your average sock. Keep in mind you will be using the foot gloves for exercise purposes so they may wear out a little faster than an average cotton sock. If you use the glove 3 times per week, it will probably last 1-2 months, possibly more or less, depending upon the usage.
